You must return the property to the same cleanliness standard it was in when you moved in — not necessarily spotless if it was not spotless to begin with. If the property was professionally cleaned before your arrival, you may be expected to arrange a professional clean on departure. Check your tenancy agreement.
Timeline tip: Start cleaning two weeks before your move-out date. Deep cleaning takes longer than you expect, and leaving it to the last day creates stress and shortcuts.
Room-by-room cleaning checklist
Kitchen — highest scrutiny area
- Oven — cleaned inside including sides, roof, and floor, door glass, drip trays
- Hob — degreased, burner caps removed and cleaned or replaced
- Extractor — filters removed, soaked, and replaced or new ones fitted
- Microwave — interior and exterior wiped
- Fridge — defrosted completely, shelves removed and washed, door seal cleaned
- Freezer — fully defrosted, wiped dry, left with door open
- Dishwasher — filter cleaned, inside wiped, door seal checked
- Sink — descaled, drain cleaned, no blockage
- Taps — limescale removed
- Countertops — degreased, no stains
- Cupboards — inside and outside wiped, no crumbs or grease
- Splash back — clean, no cooking splatter
- Floor — mopped, underneath appliances cleaned out
Bathroom
- Toilet — descaled and bleached bowl, seat wiped top and bottom, cistern exterior wiped
- Bath — limescale removed, taps and overflow cleaned, plug and drain clear
- Shower — glass or curtain cleaned, shower head descaled, tray scrubbed
- Tiles — grout scrubbed, mould treated
- Sink — descaled, drain clear, taps polished
- Mirror — streak-free
- Extractor fan — dust removed from cover
- Floor — mopped, behind toilet cleaned
Bedrooms
- Walls — marks wiped where possible (do not scrub paint)
- Carpet — vacuumed thoroughly, furniture marks treated
- Hard floor — swept and mopped
- Wardrobe — shelves and drawers wiped inside
- Windows — inside surfaces cleaned, sill wiped
- Blinds or curtains — dusted or washed

Final checks before you leave
- Photograph every cleaned room before you depart
- Take a wide shot of each room and close-ups of appliances (oven open, fridge open)
- Check nothing was left behind — loft, shed, under beds, back of cupboards
- Confirm all rubbish is removed from the property
